Finally we see in the GA-EPD data from yesterday a total for Quitman’s spill of the third of January:

120,000 gallons of raw sewage. That’s far more than my previous guess.

Let’s add up Quitman’s recent spills:

• 120,000 gallons 2019-01-03
•  40,000 gallons, 2018-12-14
•  80,000 gallons, 2018-12-02
• 240,000 gallons, total recent Quitman spills

That’s getting into the range of Valdosta’s mid-size spills.

The good news is there were no new spills reported from Valdosta, Tifton, Lowndes County, or Rochelle.

Also, for Quitman LAS, this time GA-EPD got both both the affected waterway (Okapilco Creek) and the river basin (Suwannee) right.

Plus, meanwhile in Florida in the Suwannee River Basin, there were no spills reported in the last 30 days. As usual. Valdosta is by far the biggest city in the Suwannee River Basin, with Tifton and Moultrie second and third in population, and Lake City fourth.

All cities in the Suwannee River Basin in both Florida and Georgia add up to about 150,000 people, with more than a third of them in Valdosta. This helps explain, but does not excuse, Valdosta’s sewage spills. Moultrie has two wastewater treatment plants, and the one in the Suwannee River Basin has never spilled in the years we’ve been watching it.
