The second Suwannee River Chainsaw Cleanup went well. Got a little hot in the middle, and rained towards the end.
Chainsawing deadfalls, Suwannee River 2023-06-10
But the rain came only after we cleared four deadfalls above Fargo Ramp and Reeves Landing:
- Low Log, where we retrieved a prize,
- Duck and Float Under, where there was much trapezing on the trunk,
- Drag Under Left, where water gushed from the trunk, and
- Portage Logjam, where Shirley found green Ogeechee limes.
The Above Fargo gauge was 4.67′ (95.67′ NAVD88) at 10:30 AM, which was about 3 inches lower than last time (2023-12-26). The Fargo gauge read 2.32′ (92.92′ NAVD88) at 10:30 AM, for about 2 inches lower than last time. Either way, that was a perfect water level for this expedition.
This was a mostly-Florida expedition to the Suwannee River in Georgia, with:
- Expedition leader Phil Hubbard, Valdosta, Georgia
- Thomas “TJ” Johnson, Live Oak, Florida
- Shirley Kokidko, Pearson, Georgia
- Suwannee Riverkeeper John S. Quarterman, Lowndes County, Georgia
- Phil Royce, Live Oak, Florida
- Sonia Velez-Hoy, Fernandina Beach, Florida
Thanks again to Adam Shock of the Conservation Fund for Suwannee River access at Three Steps Landing, less than 500 feet upstream from our first goal.
Thanks to landowner Marsha Hendrix for letting me take out early on her property. That bass fisher boat is very stable as a chainsaw platform, but also very slow paddling. The last four miles to Fargo would have taken so long I would have held everybody up without that early take-out.
I think Phil Hubbard also cleared the Narrow Deadfalls after I took out.
