Sugar Creek still dirty, Clean Withlacoochee and Alapaha Rivers 2025-05-01

Sugar Creek was cleaner this week, but still at the one-time testing limit for E. coli at Gornto Road, and actually higher upstream at Baytree Road. Something is still not right near the old spill site, with no rain to affect it.

The Withlacoochee River and the Alapaha River were clean.

No new sewage spills have been reported in the past week in the Suwannee River Basin in Georgia or Florida.

No rain is predicted until Sunday, or maybe Saturday afternoon downstream.

So avoid Sugar Creek, and happy paddling, swimming, fishing, and boating this weekend!

Sugar Creek

Valdosta Utilities got 640 cfu/100 mL E. coli for Tuesday at Baytree Road on Sugar Creek, above the the former sewage spill site, and below at Gornto Road, they got 410. Both are at or above the 410 one-time test limit.

The Gornto result is lower than other recent results, bu the Baytree result is higher.

Something is still not right on Sugar Creek.

Withlacoochee River

Yet Valdosta Utilities got a very clean 20 for Tuesday at North Valdosta Road, matching Cindy Vedas’ 33 from a week before. They also got 380 at GA 133, downstream from Sugar Creek: that could be cleaner. They got a very clean 40 at US 84.

Alapaha River

WWALS Tester Kimberly Godden Tanner for Thursday reported, “Bia and I got great results at both locations this week. I sampled and she plated and we both reviewed the results. There were people swimming at the beach and boating at Lakeland. It was a beautiful day!”

She got 33 at Lakeland Boat Ramp and 0 at Naylor Park Beach.

For context, see: https://wwals.net/issues/testing

The numbers in the chart boxes indicate E. coli levels as colony-forming units per 100 mililiters (cfu/100 mL), according to Georgia Adopt-A-Stream bacterial monitoring protocols:
Zero (0) is what we want to see, and often we do, on the Alapaha and upstream on the Suwannee Rivers.
From 1-125 is within long-term average limits according to U.S. EPA and Georgia and Florida state agencies.
From 126-409 long-term is not good, and is likely to make some people sick.
From 410-999 is likely to make some people sick; try not to get that water on you.
From 1,000 and up: high alert; best not to get close to that water without gloves; wash clothes afterward.

The letters before the numbers indicate the source of the datapoint, as in W100 means 100 cfu/100 mL found by a WWALS tester.

Water quality testing training and funding

WWALS Water Quality Tester Cindy Vedas reviewed the results. Such review is part of every WWALS tester’s ongoing training.

WWALS water quality testing trainer Gretchen Quarterman scheduled refresher training for testers who need it.
