A few paragraphs about Chemours layoffs have been circling around north Florida, about the titanium dioxide (TiO2) mines near Starke, Florida. Chemours layoffs actually affect many mines in both Florida and Georgia, and Chemours already closed some mines, due to low prices for the minerals it mines.
No, Krebs Land Development did not buy any mines nor operations from Chemours. Krebs is an earthmoving contractor that has worked for Chemours for some time, in both Georgia and Florida.
Now Chemours is outsourcing more operations to Krebs. Some Chemours former employees may end up working for Krebs, run by Stuart Krebs.
Chemours closed some TiO2 mines, now lays off workers 2026-01-06, outsources to contractor, because of low prices
Why? Housebuilding is down, so there is less demand for white paint. Also, much TiO2 is being imported. So the price of TiO2 is down. This is the most up to date graph I can find, which only goes through October 2025. Apparently it’s gotten worse since then.

On this WWALS map, let’s look at the Chemours mines from north to south.

map of all public landings in the Suwannee River Basin, 2026-01-14
The Amelia A mine near Jesup, GA, is mined out and closed for a year. Chemours was going to move east across US 84 to Amelia B, but not now. These mines are in the Altamaha River basin.
Mission South north of Folkston, GA, was mined out in October 2024. They have been doing Mission North since then. These mines are in the Satilla River basin.
As you know, the Conservation Fund bought out the Twin Pines Minerals (TPM) site near St. George, GA. TPM has not been associated with Chemours since TPM was processing tailings at two Chemours north Florida sites and caused a Florida Consent Order on TPM and Chemours.
The Chemours Maxville North mine appears to be closed, beteen Macclenny and Maxville, FL. This mine is in the St. Marys River Basin.
This is according to a usually reliable Chemours source. Any errors are due to my transcription, not the source. However, see below for corroboration of the locations of the layouts, and more detail. Apparently the Maxville mine south of Maclenny and Maxville, and the Highland mine between Maxville and Starke, remain open. Those mines are uphill from the New River of the Santa Fe River, upstream from the Suwannee River.
My source is among the layoffs that will be effective March 6, 2026.
That’s already more detail than the story that keeps getting shared:

WARN is Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, federal law since 1989 as 20 CFR Part 639.
§ 639.1 Purpose and scope.
(a) Purpose of WARN. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN or the Act) provides protection to workers, their families and communities by requiring employers to provide notification 60 calendar days in advance of plant closings and mass layoffs. Advance notice provides workers and their families some transition time to adjust to the prospective loss of employment, to seek and obtain alternative jobs and, if necessary, to enter skill training or retraining that will allow these workers to successfully compete in the job market. WARN also provides for notice to State dislocated worker units so that dislocated worker assistance can be promptly provided.
Florida provides more detail on Chemours layoffs:

It’s hard to tell from that table what the first two mine sites are. But Florida Commerce even linked to the layoff letter from Chemours, which has much more detail.
