Meanwhile, the winner of the third Within These WWALS contest is:

Jennifer Harris, of Parrott, Terrell County, Georgia.

She lives in the Flint River watershed, but she answered all the questions correctly before anybody else did.

Withlacoochee and Little Rivers note cards

She got a set of Withlacoochee and Little Rivers note cards, sent to her by WWALS charter board member emeritus Bret Wagenhorst. You can get your own from the WWALS online stor for $10.00.

The answers to Within These WWALS #3 are:

Plant: Wild Azalea, Rhododendron canescens.

Blooms February to April, with a sweet jasmine scent. No, not honeysuckle: that’s a vine; this is a bush.

Bird: Buzzard or vulture.

This one is a Black vulture, Coragyps atratus, with black head, about 2 feet long with 5-foot wingspan, and white wingtips. Can live to 25 years.

Also commonly seen are Turkey Vulture, Cathartes aura, with red head, about 2.5 feet long with 5.5-foot wingspan, and dark, actually brown, wings, paler underneath. Can live to 16 years.

Both types of buzzards soar on thermals seeking carrion. They mate for life.

Event: BIG Little River Paddle Race, from Red Roberts Landing 3 miles downstream on the Little River to Reed Bingham State Park (West) Boat Ramp.

This year will be the Eighth Annual. Postponed this year due to pandemic. We are working on ways to hold it. It’s family fun, and a fundraiser for WWALS and Friends of Reed Bingham State Park (FORB).

Scenic body of water: Little River.

This is the Little River that starts one that flows into the Withlacochee River near Valdosta, not the Little River that flows into the Suwannee River. That’s the Withlacoochee River that flows into the Suwannee, not the Withlacoochee (south) that flows into the Gulf.
