Exploring the Santa Fe River: Origins –Joanne Tremblay 2023-11-03

Joanne Tremblay says, “I was inspired to create a visual of the river’s path so folks could get a better understanding of its changes it goes through before it becomes the spring-laden stretch that most are familiar with. All my own footage, paddles are a composite from my own at different times.”

My favorite is this slide, “I will not repeat this journey”, about Worthington to Bible Camp Road: “Seven miles through tangled woods”.

Joanne says, “You like that stretch through the brambles going west from Worthington? Agh! We hit a sudden rush right about Olustee and a friend flipped, that was exciting.”

Olustee Creek is the border between Union County upstream on right (north) bank of the Santa Fe River and Columbia County downstream. On the left (south) bank of the river, it’s Alachua County all the way.

That rodeo reminds me of the upper Alapaha and Withlacoochee Rivers, and of the Suwannee River Narrows between Stephen C. Foster State Park and Griffis Fish Camp.

Join WWALS for that stretch and campfire castiron cooking, December 8-10, 2023.

We will start the New Year in the Santa Fe River Basin, Iche Nippy Dip Day Swim and Paddle, Ichetucknee River, Ichetucknee Headspring, 2024-01-06.

Here is Joanne’s video:

Join us as we follow the journey of the Santa Fe River; from a trickle coming out of the Santa Fe Swamp to its drop into the karst hole at O’Leno. We stop along its path, sometimes paddling, sometimes walking as we learn about it’s journey before it crosses the Cody Escarpment and the many springs.
