Dirty Sugar Creek, clean Withlacoochee and Alapaha Rivers 2025-02-13

Update 2025-02-16: Filthy Sugar Creek, Clean Withlacoochee River at State Line 2025-02-14.

Sugar Creek wasn’t as horrible this week as last, but it still tested too high in E. coli at Gornto Road and downstream for Wednesday.

That was before an inch or two of rain Thursday, which most likely washed more contamination into Sugar Creek and on into the Withlacoochee River.

But Valdosta Utilities got good results for the Withlacoochee River both upstream and downstream of Sugar Creek.

And WWALS got excellent results for the Alapaha River at Lakeland Boat Ramp and Naylor Park Beach.

One new sewage spill was reported in the last week in Georgia, by Ashburn, into Hat Creek upstream on the Alapaha River. See other post:

None were reported in Florida.

Saturday is supposed to be partly sunny, with thunderstorms Sunday.

So other than near Sugar Creek, happy fishing, swimming, paddling, and boating this weekend, before the rain!

We did cancel the chainsaw cleanup tomorrow, due to high water level and Sugar Creek contamination.

But there’s another one on Sunday, February 23:

Cancelled: Withlacoochee River Langdale Park Chainsaw Cleanup 2025-02-23

Update 2025-04-01: Try again: Chainsaw Cleanup, Withlacoochee River upstream from Troupville 2025-03-04.

Cancelled due to high water. It’s hard to chainsaw logs six feet under.

Join us at Langdale Park on the Withlacoochee River seeking deadfalls to chainsaw and trash to collect.

Thanks to Phil Hubbard for leading this one, continuing after the last one on this route.

Depending on conditions such as water level, we may instead start at Troupville Boat Ramp and go down around the Little River Confluence and up the Withlacoochee River.

When: Gather 9 AM, launch 9:30 AM, end 2 PM, Sunday, February 23, 2025

Put In: Langdale Park Boat Ramp, 3781 N. Valdosta Rd., Valdosta, GA 31602, in Lowndes County.

Update 2025-04-01: Try again: Chainsaw Cleanup, Withlacoochee River upstream from Troupville 2025-03-04.

Phil Hubbard sawed many deadfalls large to medium from Langdale Park Boat Ramp downstream on the Withlacoochee River Sunday.

We stopped a bit above Sugar Creek, because of outboard fuel issues, plus the whole trip ended up eight hours, which is enough for one day.

Thanks to Phil Hubbard for leading this one.

While my job was basically boat driver, I did saw a bit, as well.

The water level was 119.6 feet NAVD88 at noon on the Valdosta Gauge.

Thanks to Wild Green Future for the grant that bought the 9.9hp outboard, the 24-inch Husqvarna chainsaw (which we did not need to use this time), and the twin LiFePO4 batteries which we did use along with the 86lb thrust trolling motor.

TJ Johnson is leading the next chainsaw cleanup, this Saturday, when we will go again at the Withlacoochee River upstream from Troupville 2025-02-15.

Hahira wastewater treatment plant permit reissuance request NPDES GA0037974 2024-10-16

Last October, after a public comment period that apparently had few if any comments, GA-EPD reissued Hahira’s wastewater permit, with eight major changes, all tightening or updating effluent limits.

[Collage Hahira wastewater treatment plant permit reissuance request NPDES GA0037974 2025-10-16]

The re-issued permit is on the WWALS website.

Please Note The Following Changes to the Proposed NPDES Permit From The Existing Permit:

Part I.B — Effluent Limitations and Monitoring Requirements — Stream Discharge:

  • Decreased the monthly average biochemical oxygen Demand (BODs) limit from 30 mg/L to 20 mg/L to be protective of the instream Water Quality standards (WQS) for Dissolved Oxygen (DO).
  • Decreased the monthly average ammonia limit from 10 mg/L to 1.0 mg/L to be protective of the instream WQS for DO and address toxicity impairment.
  • Added a daily minimum dissolved oxygen limit of 5.0 mg/L to be protective of the instream WQS for DO.
  • Added monthly total nitrogen (TN) limit of 20 mg/L to meet Florida’s instream nutrient criteria at the State line.
  • Added total phosphorus (TP) limit of 3.6 mg/L to meet Florida’s instream nutrient criteria at the state line
  • Replaced monthly average fecal coliform effluent limit of 200 counts/100 mL with monthly average Escherichia coli (E. coli) of 126 counts/100 mL to reflect the recently approved bacterial indicator for freshwater. The proposed limit is in accordance with EPD’s Bacteria Equivalency Strategy for Using the Optimal Indicator Organisms for WQS and NPDES Permitting, 2022.
  • Converted mass loading limits from kg/day to lbs/day to be consistent with other NPDES permits in Georgia.
  • Added effluent data monitoring testing requirements for future permit renewal.

The settling ponds are at 598 Hall St, Hahira, GA 31632.

What the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (GA-EPD) calls the “unnamed tributary to Franks Creek”, we call Hahira LAS Pond Branch on the WWALS map of the Withlacoochee and Little River Water Trail. Continue reading

Update 2025-04-01: Clean Franks Creek 2025-02-26 and Alapaha and Withlacoochee Rivers 2025-02-27.

Yesterday from Troupville Boat Ramp around the Little River Confluence and up the Withlacoochee River, we were stopped by the same CiHiG Deadfall that stopped us back on November 23, 2024.

The lower log was partly exposed yesterday, but not enough to get two cuts out of it.

The water level was 119.88 feet NAVD88 on the Valdosdta Gauge.

We also went up the Little River a few miles and back. More on that later.

Meanwhile, today you can join us for Langdale Park Downstream Withlacoochee Chainsaw Cleanup 2025-02-09.

Yesterday, TJ Johnson, leading this expedition, got one good cut in with wedges to keep it from jamming the saw. Continue reading

Kayaks and canoes and jon boats are invited to join the WWALS jon boat with 9.9hp outboard seeking deadfalls to chainsaw and trash to collect.

We will go downstream from Langdale Park Boat Ramp as far as we can get, and then back up. We’ll be lucky if we get as far as Sugar Creek.

Thanks to Phil Hubbard for leading this one.

Withlacoochee River and New River clean, Sugar Creek Dirty 2025-02-06

Update 2025-02-14: Five days of changes in GA-EPD Sewage Spills Report 2025-02-14.

A step backwards: Sugar Creek tested too high in E. coli at Gornto Road for Wednesday.

It’s not as high as in many weeks, but still above the alert limit. And there had been no rain to wash anything into the creek.

So, what’s going on? Is there another leak? Or a glitch in the sewage spill bypass?

[New River clean 2025-02-02, Withlacoochee Clean 2025-02-06, Sugar Creek, Dirty 2025-02-05]
New River clean 2025-02-02, Withlacoochee Clean 2025-02-06, Sugar Creek, Dirty 2025-02-05

WWALS and Valdosta Utilities got good results for the Withlacoochee River both upstream and downstream of Sugar Creek.

And WWALS got OK results for the New River downstream (south) of Tifton at GA 125 in Berrien County.

No new sewage spills have been reported in the last week in Georgia or Florida.

No rain is predicted for the next five days, with warm sunny weather this weekend.

So happy fishing, swimming, paddling, and boating this weekend!

Clean New Little, Withlacoochee, Alapaha Rivers; Sugar Creek finally OK 2025-01-29

Update 2025-02-08: Withlacoochee River and New River clean, Sugar Creek Dirty 2025-02-06.

Finally! Valdosta Utilities got OK water quality results for Sugar Creek at Gornto Road, for the first time since the November 6-7, 2024, flash flood. Apparently the bypass is working.

WWALS got OK results for the New Little River south of Tifton and the Alapaha River at US 82, GA 122, and US 84.

Valdosta Utilities got OK results for the Withlacoochee River at US 41, good at GA 133, and OK at US 84.

However, Valdosta Utilities got too-high results at Knights Creek at Inner Perimeter Road. I wonder if there is a Sewage Spill warning sign there?

No new sewage spills have been reported in the last week in Georgia or Florida.

No rain is predicted for the next nine days, with balmy weather this weekend.

So happy fishing, swimming, paddling, and boating this weekend!
