The Alapaha River already flooded at Irwinville, Georgia and is back down. It is still in Minor Flood at Alapaha and Lakeland. If you are near the Alapaha River between US 82 and US 84, you may want to consider heading for higher ground. However, at Lakeland the river has crested and is dropping.
The river soon will be in flood at Statenville, Georgia, and Jennings, Florida. However, all of the bridges are still open.

At Irwinville (GA 125) the river crested in Minor Flood at 274.6 feet NAVD88 on Sunday, September 29. It’s back below Action Stage, down at 262.3.

At Alapaha (US 82 at Sheboggy Boat Ramp), it crested in Minor Flood at 225.64 feet on Monday, September 30, and is back down to 223.2, about to go back to Action Stage at 223.

There’s no gauge at Lakeland Boat Ramp (GA 122 or GA 37), but presumably the river is in minor flood there, as well. According to “> Lanier County Sheriff Nick Norton, “NOTICE– Lakeland Bridge / Alapaha River…. DOT reports the river is DROPPING.”

LAKELAND, Ga. (WALB)—Hurricane Helene dumped billions of gallons of rain across Georgia causing severe flooding in some areas.
Alapaha River Flooding –WCTV 2024-10-02That rainwater has led the Lanier County Emergency Management Director to urge people to evacuate if they live near the Alapaha River or any body of water that feeds into the river because of flooding.
Lanier EMA recommends leav –WCTV 2024-10-02“We are only recommending that they leave…strongly recommending that they leave, because it is going to flood and it’s probably going to flood their homes,” said Tony Galardo, Lanier County EMA director. “Last night, we were actually down in the Oak Ridge subdivision and we advised all the people on the river that they should pack all of their stuff up and evacuate then because the river was coming up to the back of the homes.”
At Statenville (GA 94, Statenville Boat Ramp), it is currently in Action Stage at 92.21, rising rapidly, expected to crest just barely in Major Flood at 103.1 on Monday, October 7.

The Georgia Department of Transportation Southwest Region says, “Franks Creek bridge on Shiloh Rd in Lowndes Co & the Reed Bingham State Park bridge on the Colquitt Co side were inspected this morning by GDOT bridge inspectors and reopened. No state route bridges in our 31-county SW District are closed.”

At Jennings, Florida (CR 150, just downstream from Sasser Landing), the gauge reads 73.06, rising rapidly towards Action Stage at 77 feet.

We have not heard of any bridges closed on the Alapaha River in Florida, and Florida 511 shows no bridge closures in the Suwannee River Basin in Florida.
