Chemours closed some TiO2 mines, now lays off workers, outsources to contractor 2026-01-06

A few paragraphs about Chemours layoffs have been circling around north Florida, about the titanium dioxide (TiO2) mines near Starke, Florida. Chemours layoffs actually affect many mines in both Florida and Georgia, and Chemours already closed some mines, due to low prices for the minerals it mines.

No, Krebs Land Development did not buy any mines nor operations from Chemours. Krebs is an earthmoving contractor that has worked for Chemours for some time, in both Georgia and Florida.

Now Chemours is outsourcing more operations to Krebs. Some Chemours former employees may end up working for Krebs, run by Stuart Krebs.

Why? Housebuilding is down, so there is less demand for white paint. Also, much TiO2 is being imported. So the price of TiO2 is down. This is the most up to date graph I can find, which only goes through October 2025. Apparently it’s gotten worse since then. Continue reading →

Okefenokee flyaround –Wayne Morgan 2019-10-05

The cause of this flight was the titanium mine Twin Pines Minerals wants to put near the southeast corner of the Okefenokee Swamp. We documented they have heavy equipment on that site now:

The mine site is less than three miles from the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, and about the same distance from the Cherokee of Georgia Tribal Grounds:

Swamp more important than miners under Consent Order in Florida

A resolution supporting the TPM mine is on the agenda for the Charlton County Commission meeting, 6PM this Thursday, August 15, 2019, 68 Kingsland Drive, Folkston, GA. Especially if you live in Charlston County, please go to that meeting and object. Even better, contact your County Commissioner before the meeting.

Consent Order, FDEP v. Chemours involving Twin Pines Minerals 2019-02-07

Twin Pines Minerals (TPM) is cited in a consent order on Chemours mines, for failure to collect data, spilling waste through silt fences and not cleaning it up, and being out of compliance on numerous counts, including radium and iron, in the Suwannee, St. Johns, and St. Mary’s River basins in Florida.

This is the same TPM that has applied to mine titanium in Charlton County, Georgia, near the Okefenokee Swamp, which is the headwaters of the Suwannee and St. Mary’s Rivers.
