Pollution spill maps online, up to date, with interactive links to details: Florida is doing it, and so can Georgia.
For more than a year FDEP has been posting spill reports online in a spreadsheet the same day it gets them, with email notice signup (Alabama also does that). FDEP has added a Public Notice of Pollution (PNP) Finder: Last 30 Days, which helps a lot in finding spills in our watersheds.
Did you know there was a Phosphoric Acid spill at White Springs last week, on Swift Creek, next to the Suwannee River? Yes, it was Nutrien (former PCS). This is yet more evidence that a phosphate mine in Union or Bradford Counties would be a bad idea.
How about a coal runoff spill at Crystal River, also last week? This is yet another reason Duke Energy should get on with more solar power like its Hamilton Solar Farm so it can shut down that Crystal River coal plant and stop building new gas plants and pipelines.
Both spills are on the FDEP map.
If the Florida Department of Environmental Protection can do this, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division can, too. Then the people of Georgia and Florida would know when Valdosta or Tifton or Quitman or Lowndes County spills.

Coal runoff spill at Crystal River
Incident Name: Discharge of industrial wastewater to the ground
SWO Incident Number: 20185909
Incident Report: At approximately 3:30 pm yesterday September 19, 2018 at the Crystal River Units 4&5 station, staff noticed a drop in flow on the Coal Pile Run-off system. This system treats contact stormwater collected from the lined coal pile area to treat for pH and TSS prior to discharge to the unlined stormwater collection system as authorized by NPDES permit FL0036366. It was discovered that the drop in flow was caused by a 3″ hole in the cast iron above ground pipe that runs from the coal pile run-off ponds to the treatment system. Based on a drop in flow of 100 GPM for about 1 hour until the failure was discovered and the system was shut down, it was estimated that approximately 6,000 gallons were discharged to the ground adjacent to the treatment system. There was no discharge to the NPDES stormwater ditch nor to surface waters of the US. The pH of the standing water discharged was measured and it was 6.1 s.u. on a sample collected yesterday and 7.2 s.u. on a sample collected this morning. The water stayed on-site and it is not expected to cause impacts to the ground water at the site. The pipe has been isolated and in the process of being repaired.
